Fiona Zechmeister – Illustrator

What is your specialism within book publishing?

I work as an illustrator, specialising in children’s books and illustrated book covers.

Can you describe what you do in 10 words or fewer?

I help to tell stories with visuals.

What led you to go freelance?

The possibility to meet new and interesting people and to work on various exciting projects.

Do you work primarily for publishing companies or independent authors or a mix?

At the moment I primarily work for publishers but I’ve worked with independent authors as well.

What’s the best part of doing what you do?

Creating artworks and when I managed to visualise the author’s/client’s written word and I see the happiness and excitement of everybody involved.

What do you know now that you wish you had known when you started your freelance journey?

The importance of networking.

How many books are in your TBR (to be read) pile/list? And do you plan to read them all eventually?

There are so many books I would like to read, the number is increasing almost daily but I hope to read them at some point.

Do you prefer physical books or ebooks?

As an illustrator I think it really depends on the project, I’ve created a pop up children’s book which obviously creates a unique experience as a physical item. However as I also did some animation work which made me see a lot of potential in the digital form and how stories can profit from that medium.

Do you have any advice for anyone considering a career in publishing?

Work hard and love doing it.

What is your favourite children’s book and your favourite adult’s book?

Favourite children’s book (german): Die drei Schwestern und Ritter Blaubart by Roser Capdevila
Favourite adult book: Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke
